Choose-your-path romance, in audio: how the endings work

Like the choose-your-path books, but he hears your answer and remembers it.

Choose-your-own-adventure books worked because a single decision ("turn to page 40") made the story feel like yours. Romance games and story apps took the idea further, with long branching seasons. Moonvale keeps it small: a short story, a few decisions, two or three endings, all in audio.

How a story branches

Every story starts the same way: an opening scene that ends on his first question. That opening is free to hear for every story in the library. From there, your answers send the story down different paths. Some decisions change only his next line; others change the scene, and the last decisions decide the ending.

The story also remembers. If you told him earlier you were exhausted, or got the door code right, he may bring it up later. A recap at the end shows what you chose.

Finding every ending

Each story page lists its endings and marks the ones you have found. Because the stories are short, replaying to find another ending takes a few minutes, not an evening. Some listeners play each story twice: once honestly, once to see what happens if they answer the other way.

Is there a "right" answer?

No. There is no score, no good or bad ending in the game sense, and nothing to fail. Some endings are sweeter and some are more bittersweet, and the one you reach by answering honestly is usually the one that feels most like yours. Wrong keypad codes and silences are part of the story too; he reacts to them in character, and the story carries on.

Bonus endings

Some of our newer stories add an extra ending or an extended scene for Gold listeners. The choice that leads there carries a gold seal, so you always know when a path needs Gold, and the regular endings are complete stories on their own.

Where to start

Room 412 is a good one for replaying: a dead key card, a stranger with a tiny kettle, and three quite different endings. Last Train is free and uses every kind of answer. See what each plan includes.
